Vision The University of Nicosia aspires to be a leading contributor to excellence in education and show more...

The University of Nicosia (UNIC, for short) is the place where you can build your future. We are the largest university in Cyprus, with more than 11,000 students from over 70 countries across the globe, coming together in an innovative and transformative learning space. Located in Nicosia, the country’s capital, and with presence in 18 other cities worldwide, we are driven by our pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning, innovation, research, technology, and a continually evolving academic environment. We empower our students and instill in them the confidence to make an impact in the world. Many of our degree programmes and departments were the first of their kind in Cyprus. Over time, several programmes such as Medicine, International Relations, Accounting, Law, and Architecture, have developed into some of the most well-regarded in Cyprus and in the region. Today, UNIC’s new programmes focus on cutting-edge research, making us global leaders in certain fields, such as in our very successful initiative in Digital Currency/Blockchain Technology. Internationalisation is a central component of UNIC’s strategy. This includes partnerships for degree programmes, student mobility, and opportunities for students post-graduation in academia or industry, in order to share knowledge and capabilities across countries. The first and largest medical programme in Cyprus was formed in collaboration with St George’s, University of London. Today, the Medical School attracts over 500 students from around the world. In Greece, we offer several joint Masters degrees with the top Greek universities: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Patras and the Hellenic Open University. These are some of the most popular degree programmes in Greece. We intend to actively continue our partnerships with leading universities around the world, on both the academic and research front.

Over the past decade, the University’s research and developmental programmes have increased. This has been attributed to the accession of Cyprus to the European Union (EU), the significant increase in funding for research by the Cyprus Government and, above all, the rapid growth of the University that resulted in an increase in faculty members which, invariably, led to the establishment of new areas of study and research. The University of Nicosia is currently involved in a broad area of research ranging from Environmental Sustainability to Medicine and from International Relations to Social Sciences. Faculty are encouraged to pursue research in all endeavours considered essential to our academic life. To help faculty achieve their potential, the University has further enhanced its research infrastructure composed of the University Research Committee, Research Ethics Committee, Schools’ Research Committees, and the Research & Innovation Office. In addition to the individual faculty member’s research activities, the University is affiliated with several research centres that focus on particular topics. The various centres enjoy a considerable degree of autonomy, including some that are totally autonomous but have academic working agreements with the University. Other sources of research come from faculty who hold Chairs at the University, such as the UNESCO Chair, PriceWaterHouseCoopers Chair, and the Dialogue Chair in Middle Eastern Studies. The University of Nicosia also maintains close ties with industry, business and society at large through a variety of institutions and through the hosting of conferences, round table discussions and symposiums. Through these affiliated institutions the University directly contributes to the development of the country and its citizens; helping all meet the increasing demands of globalization through innovation. Such institutions include the University of Nicosia Research Foundation, the University of Nicosia Business Centre, the Business School Advisory Council, the Helix Business Incubator and the Law Clinic. For a young institution, a mere 33 years old, the University is on the move! It is forward-looking, building on knowledge and innovation. The University of Nicosia, through the large variety of research projects it has been involved with, has been able to create an extensive local and international network of contacts. As such, a variety of funding agencies, from the local Research Promotion Foundation, to the European Union’s Framework programme have seen applications from researchers at the University fit for funding. The University welcomes new collaborations, whether they are academic, business, or government networks, as these are the promise of the future as globalization shrinks distances and enlarges economies and opportunities.

About the city

Cyprus is situated in the north-eastern corner of the Mediterranean, at the meeting point of Europe, Asia and Africa. Since the dawn of history, Cyprus has been one of the most interesting areas of the region, with a rich and visible cultural history. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans, along with Crusaders, Byzantines, Franks and Ottomans have all left a powerful legacy for the modern visitor to see and admire. Cyprus is endowed with golden beaches, virgin green forests and other natural wonders. The environment is one of the healthiest in the world, free from pollution and the other ill-effects of industrialised countries. Crime is almost non-existent and the Cypriot people are famous for the warm and friendly welcome they extend to visitors. Like Singapore and Hong Kong, Cyprus is an important financial and business centre, with over 70% of the economy focused on services. The main industries in Cyprus are financial and professional services, banking, investment management, shipping, tourism and real estate. Cyprus hosts the financial infrastructure for thousands of multinational companies due to its stable and modern legal and tax environment, highly educated workforce, and excellent quality of life. On the tourism side, Cyprus has over 1,000 hotels and resorts and one of the most developed tourism infrastructures per-capita in the world. Cyprus is also a global maritime hub. It is the 2nd largest ship management centre in the world, responsible for maintaining and operating a large percentage of the world’s fleets. It also has the 3rd largest merchant fleet in the EU. UNIC has exceptionally close ties to industry. We are by far the leading trainer of the accounting profession in Cyprus, we have the longest track record of hospitality education in the country, and we recently established the Cyprus Maritime Academy, an initiative supported by the world’s largest shipping companies.
